Secondary School of Nursing in Ljubljana has a strong history of educating young people in the field of nursing. Its origins date back to 1753 when the empress Maria Theresa established a School for Midwives in Ljubljana. The school was in operation until 1981 when it was closed down.
In 1929, School for Child Nursing was established and from 1967 on the curriculum also involved general nursing. The school went under different names throughout the years.
Secondary School of Nursing in Ljubljana came into being in 1981 following the merger of the School for Midwives and the School for General Nursing. Despite bad working conditions (the lack of proper school building and much needed school facilities) the school successfully continued its educational mission. There were many plans and promises to build a new school building but it was not until 1998 that these plans were realised. For the first time in Slovenian history, a new building for a school of nursing was built. Today our modern school faces many new challenges. Mrs. Marija Verbič, our new head, has inherited a school with rich history and high quality in nursing education.
